Professor Ulrich Martin receives science prize of the German Technion Society Print

The German Technion Society has awarded Professor Dr. Ulrich Martin, director of the Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO) of Hannover Medical School (MHH) and deputy coordinator of the REBIRTH (From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy) cluster of excellence, as well as Professor Dr. Ilan Marek, Institute for Chemistry, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology – the Scienze Prize of the German Technion Society e.V. on May, 6 2010.

Every two years, the society awards two young scientists, who acquire particular credit through scientific cooperation between the Technion and Germany. The prize is annotated with 5.000 Euro per award recipient and is supposed to support scientific cooperation.

Stammzellen aus Nabelschnurblut Print

"MHH-Forscher können aus Nabelschnurblut Stammzellen herstellen, die nahezu unbegrenzt vermehrbar sind..."

Wissenschaftlern der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover (MHH) ist es gelungen, aus Zellen des menschlichen Nabelschnurblutes so genannte induzierte pluripotente Stammzellen (iPS-Zellen) herzustellen. Diese können sich – wie embryonale Stammzellen – zu allen Zellen des Körpers weiterentwickeln. Somit sind sie Hoffnungsträger für Therapien zahlreicher Krankheiten. Das Team um Professor Dr. Ulrich Martin, stellvertretender Koordinator des Exzellenzclusters REBIRTH, veröffentlichte seine Ergebnisse in der aktuellen Ausgabe des renommierten Magazins Cell Stem Cell. Erstautorin ist die Biologin Alexandra Haase. Es ist die erste Publikation aus Deutschland zu menschlichen induzierten pluripotenten Stammzellen (iPS).

New building Hans-Borst-Center Print

0n 14th May 2008 the LEBAO as one of the central REBIRTH institutions moved into the Hans Borst Center for Heart and Stem Cell Research, financed by the Braukmann-Wittenberg-Heart Foundation.

Excerpt from the MHH press release: (ina/sc)

At the first cut with the spade, the construction of a new research center for regenerative medicine began on the MHH campus on March 23rd, 2007. In this building, which is to be finished in the summer 2008, those scientists and further partner institutes will be accommodated, who last year for the project REBIRTH ("From regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy") received funding of nearly 40 million Euros for the coming five years issued by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments. The new building, which costs more than 13 million Euros, will carry the name Hans Borst Center for Heart and Stem Cell Research, and was funded by the Braukmann-Wittenberg-Heart Foundation from Burgwedel.
